HRL Laboratories Reaches 300th Issued Patent

LOS ANGELES, January 24, 2007ÑJust upon entering the new year, HRL Laboratories has achieved the 300th issued patent level. As of this early January date, the 300th and 301st patents were issued to HRL by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This milestone follows less than two years after being awarded its 200th issued patent, and less than a year after being named ÒA Company of ExcellenceÓ in the Patent Scorecard industry-by-industry ranking of companies based on innovation metrics.

One of the current landmark patents was invented by John Vajo and titled, ÒAmmonia fuel cell.Ó The other was invented by David Payton and titled, ÒMethod and apparatus for providing directed communications through a networked array of nodes.Ó After being organized in December 1997 as a limited liability company from the former Hughes Research Laboratories, Inc., HRL had it first patent issued in its own name on September 12, 2000.

The HRL technical staff submits approximately 140 invention disclosures per year. Some of those are owned by HRLÕs equity Members, Boeing and General Motors. These latter inventions, which are not owned by HRL, generate additional inventions created that are not counted in the 300 that are owned by HRL.

The Patent Scorecard 2006 was issued by the Intellectual Property, Intelligence Quotient (ipIQ), a Chicago-based entity that focuses on advancing patent-based intellectual property as a measurable financial asset. Its rankings in 2007 are being featured in the Wall Street JournalÕs weekly financial coverage.
