HRL to Enhance Imaging Sensing in DARPA's KECoM Program

MALIBU, Calif., March 21, 2011—HRL Laboratories, LLC, announced today it will lead a university team in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Knowledge Enhanced Comprehensive Measurement Program, or KECoM.

The goal of the program is to eliminate the bottleneck in information gathering that results from a variety of competing imaging sensors with varying capabilities. DARPA is looking to revolutionize the measurement process and thereby drastically improve the quality and quantity of acquired information for specific tasks while reducing the cost of deployed sensing systems.

The HRL team proposes to develop and demonstrate a new compressive imaging architecture and mathematical infrastructure that will utilize image measurements 100 times more efficiently for specific tasks than existing technology. “Increasing the effective measurement efficiency of imaging sensors, will, among other benefits, enhance the imaging capabilities on multiple platforms and in a myriad of environments,” said HRL Principal Scientist and KECoM lead Dr. Yuri Owechko.
