HRL Welcomes New Member to Its Board of Directors

MALIBU, Calif., March 31, 2011—HRL Laboratories, LLC, announced today the addition of Dr. J. Gary Smyth to its Board of Directors. Dr. Smyth is Executive Director, North American Science Labs for General Motors’ Global Research and Development.

The announcement was made at HRL’s quarterly board meeting. Dr. Smyth replaces Dr. Alan Taub, currently GM’s Vice President, Research and Development, who has been on the HRL Board since September 2001.

Dr. Smyth began his career at GM as a Senior Project Engineer and held numerous positions before being named Engineering Director, Advanced Propulsion System Controls in 1999. In September 2004, he became Director of GM’s Powertrain Systems Research Lab, responsible for directing all research and development globally for conventional and hybridized propulsion systems. He was appointed to his current position in June of 2010.

A native of Northern Ireland and a U.S. citizen, Dr. Smyth attended The Queen’s University of Belfast where he received his BS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering in 1985 and 1991, respectively.
