HRL Awarded SLICK-AVA Project by NGA

HRL Laboratories, LLC, has received an award from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) through a competitive bid under their Boosting Innovative GEOINT (BIG) program to research artificial intelligence capabilities, specifically the Social-Aware Learning of Incisive and Collective Knowledge for Analyst Virtual Assistance or SLICK-AVA project.

The project will use machine learning to create a software system that adaptively learns to enhance intelligence analysts’ interactions with each other and autonomously socialize intelligence models and products across open-source and geospatial intelligence systems. This allows analysts to achieve accurate and reliable intelligence estimates more rapidly than in current systems. The project team resides in the Center for Computational Network Intelligence of HRL’s Information and Systems Sciences Laboratory.

“We are confident about the potential of this system and expect its success will enable NGA’s vision of a virtual analyst assistant” Principal Investigator (PI) Tsai-Ching Lu said. Co-PI Aruna Jammalamadaka added that the system may also be generalizable to optimization of organizational interactions outside of the US intelligence community. Other team members include Jiejun Xu, Sam Johnson, and Charles Martin.

The 9-month project will culminate with tests carried out at NGA facility in Springfield, VA.
